Bento is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables, usually in a box-shaped container. (Wikipedia.) I have recently been obsessed with this concept. There are groups on flickr where people share their techniques and pictures of their homemade bento lunches. And I love it! I haven’t tried it so far, but that’s mostly because I’m so lazy. lol

Some popular types of bento are kyaraben or “character bento” and oekakiben or “picture bento”. Kyaraben is a type of bento where the food resembles characters from cartoons, comics, or video games, mostly Japanese characters. Oekakiben is a type of bento that is decorated to just look like people, animals, or random objects. Examples of both are pictured above.

I am just in love with this concept! It looks like it’s so much fun to do and it makes your meal interesting. Making your own meals is also cheaper than eating out everyday for lunch. Plus it can be so much healthier by using different vegetables to make the different pictures and to make it colorful. 🙂 There are also a lot of different websites that have recipes for foods that are good in bento and also show the different techniques to make your bento fun and interesting. Just Bento is a great site with recipes and a intro into bento making, such as supplies and techniques.

There are a lot of sites that sell bento supplies as well. You can find them all over ebay as well as specialty site. JBox is an American site that sells different Japanese products, including bento boxes. There are a lot of great supplies on the site and many different types of bento boxes for any taste. On top of that there are a lot of Flickr groups that have members sharing their different bento pictures to help people with inspiration and ideas. Two great groups are Just Bento and Bento Boxes.

Has anyone else heard of bento? If so, do you do bento yourself? Would you be interested in starting?
